One significant effort is the promotion of natural farming practices. In the 2021-22 crop season, 106 growers in Karnataka adopted organic tobacco cultivation methods. For instance, in Andhra Pradesh, interest-free loans of INR 10,000 were approved for FCV tobacco farmers affected by the Michaung cyclone in December 2023.
Furthermore, the Board has been instrumental in introducing high-yielding tobacco varieties and advanced agricultural practices. These practices have led to increased productivity and income for farmers. Between 2019-20 and 2023-24, the earnings of FCV tobacco farmers more than doubled, rising from INR 124 per kg to INR 279.54 per kg.

Recognizing the financial challenges faced by tobacco farmers, especially small and marginal ones, the Tobacco Board offers various financial assistance schemes. These schemes aim to improve productivity, upgrade infrastructure, and encourage the adoption of sustainable farming practices. The assistance includes subsidies for purchasing quality seeds, fertilizers, and equipment, as well as support for crop diversification initiatives.
Impact on Tobacco Exports
The Board’s focus on sustainability has not only benefited the environment and farmers but has also positively impacted India’s tobacco exports. Over the past five years, tobacco export growth has surged by 87%. In the fiscal year 2023-24, the export value reached a record high of ₹12,005.89 crore, compared to ₹6,408.15 crore in 2019-20.
