Product description

This showpiece is a standing brass elephant cast in the Dhokra lost-wax tradition. The trunk is raised — a luck and prosperity motif for home and office décor. The body is covered in the craft’s coiled-wire ribbing, with mesh ears, small tusks, and an open jaali lattice panel on each flank.

Dhokra is made by wrapping beeswax coils around a clay core, encasing the form, and pouring molten brass so the wax burns out. The metal keeps that ribbed surface. An antique gold finish darkens the recesses and brightens the raised coils.

Use it on a shelf, desk, console, or gift tray. It is a decorative indoor figurine, not a toy, lamp, or food-contact object. Wipe with a soft dry cloth.

Handmade production means slight variation in coil texture, lattice openings, and antique highlighting from piece to piece. That variation is expected.

Sourced in India and offered by Altus Exports as a finished retail piece. Suitable as a housewarming or festival gift, a craft accent for a bookshelf, or a small cultural object for hospitality.

What is in the box

  • 1 handmade brass Dhokra elephant figurine, approx. 11.0 × 7.5 × 4.5 cm
  • Protective inner packing for the piece
  • Lost-wax coil texture and lattice openings vary slightly from piece to piece.
  • This is Dhokra-style brass, not claimed as a GI-authorised product.

The craft

The Story Behind Dhokra Brass

Dhokra is a lost-wax metal craft associated with tribal communities in central and eastern India, especially Bastar in Chhattisgarh. Artisans build a clay core, wrap it in fine beeswax coils that become the signature ribbed surface, encase the form in clay, and pour molten brass. The wax burns out — the “lost wax” — and the metal takes the coiled texture.

Animal forms are a core vocabulary of the craft. This medium elephant carries that language onto a compact export SKU: raised trunk, mesh ears, and an open jaali lattice on the flanks. Packed in India for international décor and gifting collections.

What Buyers Say

How commercial buyers describe the handmade sample piece.

  • The coiled-wire texture reads immediately as tribal metalwork, not factory polish. An 11 cm elephant is easy to merchandise on a gift wall.

    Importer, USA

  • Customers pick it up for the raised trunk, then stay for the lattice flanks. It sits well next to other Indian brass without looking like a souvenir stall.

    Home Décor Retailer, UK

  • Clear Dhokra craft story without overclaiming. We placed it beside the Moradabad brass elephant as a tribal counterpart.

    Museum Shop Buyer, France

  • Right scale for a desk or amenity tray. Light enough to ship, heavy enough to feel like metal in the hand.

    Hotels & Resorts Buyer, UAE

  • Useful as a single accent — warm antique brass, an open jaali, a raised trunk. Slight coil variation is exactly what you want in lost-wax work.
