APEDA’s Role in Strengthening the Agri-Supply Chain for Export

The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA), established in 1986 under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, plays a pivotal role in promoting the export of agricultural and processed food products. By enhancing supply chain infrastructure—encompassing cold storage, packaging, and quality control—APEDA ensures that Indian agri-products meet international standards, thereby boosting their global competitiveness.

Enhancing Cold Storage Infrastructure

Perishable agricultural products, especially horticultural goods, require efficient and time-sensitive handling to maintain their quality and meet international import standards. Due to their short shelf life, these products are often transported by air. However, air transportation poses significant challenges for horticulture exports. Firstly, the limited space available on flights restricts the volume that can be transported, and the infrequency of flights adds to the complexity. Secondly, horticultural products are typically low in weight but high in volume, meaning they take up more space while contributing less weight. This imbalance creates logistical challenges, making it difficult for Indian horticulture exports to achieve their full potential.

Advancements in Packaging

APEDA has been focusing on collaborative approaches to bring synergy with a number of organizations and institutions having inherent professional and specialized expertise in different areas for capacity building of various stakeholders and providing solutions for addressing some of the identified interventions for the development of agriculture and its export enhancement in consonance with the objectives set under the Agri Export Policy (AEP) announced by the Government of India in 2018.

Stringent Quality Control Measures

APEDA’s emphasis on quality assurance has led to improvements in production practices among farmers and food processors. The authority provides guidance and resources to ensure that products comply with international standards, thereby enhancing the global competitiveness of Indian agricultural exports. The implementation of Good Agricultural Practices (GAP) and stringent quality control measures has resulted in higher-quality products reaching international consumers.

Impact on Agricultural Exports

APEDA’s initiatives have yielded significant results. During April-November 2023, exports to major markets like Iraq, Vietnam, Saudi Arabia, and the UK experienced substantial growth compared to the previous year, surging by 110%, 46%, 18%, and 47%, respectively. This remarkable expansion underscores the increasing global demand for Indian agricultural products in key markets.
