Digital Transformation: GJEPC’s Role in Modernizing the Gem and Jewellery Sector

The Gem and Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC) has been at the forefront of driving digital transformation within India’s gem and jewellery sector. By implementing innovative digital tools and fostering technological adoption among exporters, GJEPC aims to enhance the industry’s competitiveness in the global market.

GJEPC’s Digital Initiatives

Recognizing the immense potential of e-commerce, GJEPC has actively engaged with various government departments to address policy and procedural challenges hindering exporters. For instance, the Council has collaborated with the Directorate General of Export Promotion (DGEP), Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), and Indian Customs EDI Systems (ICES) to create a seamless digital ecosystem for cross-border e-commerce. These efforts aim to empower Indian artisans and MSMEs to showcase their products globally, unlocking new opportunities in the booming online market.(GJEPC India)

In partnership with DHL Express, GJEPC has introduced streamlined door-to-door delivery services for e-commerce shipments valued at INR 10 lakh or below. This service, initially launched in Mumbai, is set to expand to key jewellery hubs like Surat, Jaipur, Delhi, and Bengaluru. GJEPC members benefit from exclusive discounts and dedicated seminars on global shipping best practices, simplifying international shipping and providing jewellery makers with the tools they need to thrive in global markets.

To further support aspiring exporters, GJEPC has launched a two-month online Exporters’ Development Program (EDP) across India. Commencing on 13th December 2024, the EDP comprises eight critical modules tailored to build export readiness, including assessing export readiness, export procedures and documentation, identifying buyers, and exporting via e-commerce platforms. With 140 participants enrolled, GJEPC has also deployed Export Managers regionally to provide extensive guidance throughout the program.

Impact on Exporters

These digital initiatives have significantly enhanced the competitiveness of Indian gem and jewellery exporters. By simplifying policies, enhancing infrastructure, and empowering exporters, GJEPC is enabling Indian artisans and MSMEs to compete globally. The potential of this sector is immense, and together, these efforts are making India a leader in gems and jewellery e-commerce.
