ESC’s Role in Boosting India’s Electronics and Software Exports: A Comprehensive Overview
India’s electronics and software sectors have witnessed remarkable growth over the past few decades, establishing the nation as a global hub for technology and innovation. A significant contributor to this success is the Electronics and Computer Software Export Promotion Council (ESC), a premier trade promotion organization sponsored by the Government of India. ESC’s initiatives have been instrumental in promoting and facilitating the export of electronics and information technology (IT) products and services to international markets.
ESC’s Mandate and Services
Established to promote India’s electronics and IT exports, ESC offers a range of services to its members, which include over 2,000 manufacturers and exporters covering the entire gamut of the electronics, telecom, and software industry. These services are designed to enhance the global competitiveness of Indian businesses and include:
-
Trade Information and Facilitation: ESC serves as a one-stop source of information on trade-related matters, providing insights into international market trends, trade inquiries, and technological advancements.
-
International Exposure: The council organizes participation in international trade fairs, exhibitions, buyer-seller meets, and business delegations abroad, enabling Indian companies to showcase their products and services on global platforms.
-
Policy Advocacy: Acting as a bridge between the industry and the government, ESC assists members in navigating policy and procedural matters, ensuring a conducive environment for export activities.
-
Match-Making Services: ESC’s excellent match-making services have helped numerous small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) reach out to global markets, facilitating joint ventures, collaborations, sub-contracting tie-ups, and technology transfers.
Impact on India’s Electronics and Software Exports
The impact of ESC’s initiatives is evident in the substantial growth of India’s electronics and software exports. Starting in 1989 with an export performance of US$200 million, ESC has successfully steered the direction of India’s electronics and software services exports to reach an all-time high of over US$187 billion during 2021-22. Under the aegis of the Council, exports have reached more than 220 countries across the world, establishing the hallmark of India’s quality and competitiveness. It is indeed a matter of pride that ESC’s members together contribute over 28% of India’s total export earnings.
In the fiscal year 2022-2023, India’s software exports grew by 12.2%, reaching $193 billion. IT software/services accounted for the largest share, contributing $126 billion, followed by BPO services at $52 billion, software product development at $5.1 billion, and engineering services at $9 billion.
The electronics manufacturing industry is also on a robust growth trajectory. According to the Ministry of Electronics & Information Technology, the industry is expected to grow from the current US$75 billion in 2020-21 to US$300 billion by 2025-26. Major products driving this growth include mobile phones, IT hardware (laptops, tablets), consumer electronics (TV and audio), industrial electronics, auto electronics, electronic components, LED lighting, strategic electronics, printed circuit board assembly (PCBA), wearables and hearables, and telecom equipment.
ESC’s Initiatives and Programs
ESC has launched several initiatives to support Indian businesses in expanding their global footprint:
-
Market Access Initiative (MAI) Scheme: As an implementation agency for export promotional activities under various government programs, ESC facilitates joint ventures, collaborations, sub-contracting tie-ups, and technology transfers.
-
ESC Incubators in the US and UK: Under the Champion Services Sectors initiative by the Department of Commerce, ESC operates business and marketing offices in the USA and the UK. These offices provide soft landing facilities for IT units aiming to enter or expand operations in these markets.
-
Trade Events and Delegations: ESC organizes participation in major international events such as CES in Las Vegas, GITEX Global in Dubai, and LEAP in Saudi Arabia, providing Indian companies with platforms to showcase their innovations and connect with potential clients and partners.
