CEPC’s International Trade Fairs and Exhibitions: Expanding Indian Carpet Markets Globally

The Indian carpet industry has long been a cornerstone of the nation’s rich cultural heritage, renowned for its intricate designs and unparalleled craftsmanship. To bolster this sector’s global presence, the Carpet Export Promotion Council (CEPC) has been instrumental in organizing international trade fairs and exhibitions. These events not only showcase the finest of Indian carpets but also serve as pivotal platforms connecting Indian exporters with international buyers, thereby expanding the global footprint of Indian carpets.

The Role of CEPC in Promoting Indian Carpets

Established under the aegis of the Ministry of Textiles, the CEPC is dedicated to promoting the export of hand-knotted carpets and other floor coverings. One of its flagship initiatives is the biannual ‘India Carpet Expo’, which has evolved into Asia’s largest handmade carpet fair. Since its inception in 2000, the expo has attracted buyers from over 60 countries, including the USA, Germany, the UK, Australia, and France. The 44th edition, held in March 2023 in New Delhi, witnessed participation from more than 200 exhibitors representing major carpet-producing regions such as Bhadohi, Mirzapur, Varanasi, Agra, Jaipur, Panipat, and Srinagar.

Impact on Indian Carpet Exports

The consistent efforts of the CEPC have yielded significant results. In the fiscal year 2023-24, India’s carpet exports reached ₹15,530.47 crore, with Bhadohi alone contributing approximately 60% of this figure.

This growth underscores the effectiveness of CEPC’s initiatives in promoting Indian carpets on the global stage.

Key Highlights from Recent Expos

  • 47th India Carpet Expo (October 2024): Held in Bhadohi, this edition saw participation from 235 international buyers spanning 38 countries, along with 255 buying representatives. The expo facilitated substantial business transactions, further solidifying India’s position in the global carpet market.
  • 45th India Carpet Expo (October 2023): Also hosted in Bhadohi, this event attracted over 300 international buyers. The expo provided a platform for buyers to source a diverse range of handmade carpets, rugs, and other floor coverings, highlighting the versatility and quality of Indian craftsmanship.

Expanding Global Reach

India exports carpets to more than 70 countries worldwide. The USA remains the largest importer, accounting for 57% of India’s carpet exports. In 2021-22, exports to the USA were valued at $1,281.29 million, up from $1,063.37 million in the previous year. Other significant markets include Germany and the UK, with exports valued at $116.64 million and $110.31 million, respectively, during the same period.

Government Initiatives Supporting the Industry

The Indian government has implemented several measures to support the carpet industry:

  • Skill Development: Programs have been conducted under the Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) to train artisans, ensuring the preservation and enhancement of traditional weaving skills.
  • Financial Support: Schemes like the Rebate of State and Central Taxes and Levies (RoSCTL) have been extended to make the textile sector more competitive internationally.
  • Marketing Support: Both physical and virtual marketing events have been organized to provide artisans with international platforms to showcase their products.
